NEW GAME! Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3, like its predecessors, is a third-person shooter that emphasizes the use of cover and squad tactics in combat situations. The player's character can carry four weapons: one pistol, one set of grenades, and two other weapons, all which can be swapped with other weapons dropped by fallen foes or at stockpiles throughout the game. Most weapons feature a secondary fire mode; the game's signature rifle, the Lancer, includes a chainsaw bayonet that can be used at close range to slice through enemies. When the player reloads a weapons ammunition, they have an opportunity for an "active reload", shown by a small cursor moving over a line with a marked section on the player's heads-up display (HUD). If the player hits a control button when the cursor is in the marked section, they will reload faster with the resulting reload being slightly more powerful than normal bullets. If they press the button outside this section, this temporarily jams the weapon, leaving the player vulnerable. Alternatively, the player can opt to not try to for the active reload, reloading the weapon at normal speed. At times, the player can carry a heavier weapon, such as a mortar or gatling gun, which slows their pace while it is carried

When in combat, the player can take some damage from enemy fire, filling a blood-colored "crimson omen" on the HUD as a measure of the player's health. By staying out of the line of fire, this will dissipate, but by taking too much damage, the player will become downed, and must be brought to their feet by an ally within a short "bleed-out" period, or else the player will die, unless playing the game on Insane difficultly level in which case a player will died immediately after taking too much damage. The player can also be killed during the bleed-out by the use of an execution move by the enemy. Some types of damage, such as explosives or head shots, can kill the player immediately without the bleed-out period. Similarly, the player can also cause enemies to fall into bleed-out in the same manner. The player and their allies and enemies can use nearly any structure as cover, firing blind from behind it or leaning out to take aimed shots. Players can quickly switch between nearby covering walls or jump over lower cover to rush forward. Within Gears of War 3, some cover can be destroyed after taking some amount of damage, which can be used to a tactical advantage to draw out enemies from cover.

New to Gears of War 3 is the ability to tag enemy opponents; computer-controller allies will then concentrate fire on these marked enemies, while human allies will be alerted to their location on their HUD. Players can now also swap weapons and ammunition with other allies in the course of battle.

NEW GAME! Assassin's Creed: Revelations

The game follows the series' standard open-world gameplay. New gameplay additions include an item called the hookblade, which can be used to zipline across the city or grab enemies to yank them in for a combo attack. The hookblade reportedly speeds up navigation by around 30 percent. Along with the hookblade, Ezio also has 300 different bomb variations at his disposal, which are to be crafted. The game features "Dali-esque" first-person platforming missions in a radical departure for the series.
Also added and expanded are siezing districts of the city from the Templars. While capturing a district is very similar to Brotherhood, the Templars will attempt to recapture districts, which Ezio must defend using a "tower defense" minigame, where he controls a group of assassins from rooftops against several waves of Templar soldiers and siege equipment. Similar to Brotherhood, initiates can be sent on missions to other regions, eventually wresting control from the Templars, and then using the city to produce a stream of income and new Assassin recruits.

The game is playable in full 3D across all three platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, with the console versions supporting both stereoscopic 3D mode for 3D HDTVs and for 2D HDTVs. All Revelations gameplay and cinematics have S3D support.

Multiplayer gameplay is also makes a return in Revelations. The mode expands the basics of online modes from Brotherhood with new characters and locations. Players are able to customize their characters' appearance and weapons, as well as start a guild and create its unique coat of arms. Matchmaking and game interface are also improved. Ubisoft says that while the component is returning, they’re putting greater focus towards the narrative, as it’s the heart of the franchise. As players level up in the multiplayer game, they move up in their Abstergo Templar rank and gain access to more information about the company.
New multiplayer modes are added to the already existing modes, including "story-oriented quests", as well as a much requested Capture the Flag mode. Some multiplayer maps are based in the island of Rhodes. Among the new additions is a new multiplayer mode - Deathmatch - which differs from the previous multiplayer gameplay in that there is no compass pointing toward your assigned target, rather, there is a box in the top right of the screen where your current target is displayed, which glows blue when you enter the line of sight of your target. There is also Simple Deathmatch, which also removes the abilities and perks from the players.
The multiplayer function is protected by the Uplay Passport system on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which requires a code for access. Codes are included in all new copies of the game, but are tied to a single Uplay account. This means that players who purchased their copy second hand, will need to purchase a new code to access the multiplayer. Codes are available for purchase from within the game menu.

NEW GAME! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

The player assumes the role of various characters during the single-player campaign, changing perspectives throughout the progression of the story. Each mission features a series of objectives that are displayed on the heads up display, which marks the direction and distance towards and from such objectives. Damage to the player is shown by the percentage of blood splatter shown on the screen. The player's health regenerates over time. Mission objectives vary in their requirements, ranging from having the player arrive at a particular checkpoint, to eliminating enemies in a specified location, to standing their ground against enemy squadrons, manning mini-guns and other weapons, and planting explosive charges on an enemy installation. Some of these objectives can be failed, and may or may not hinder progression of the story. The player is also accompanied by fellow soldiers who cannot be issued orders.

Modern Warfare 3 features a new mode, called Survival Mode. This game mode features one or two players fighting endless waves of enemies, with each wave becoming increasingly difficult. Despite being much compared to the World at War Nazi Zombies mode, enemies do not spawn at fixed locations like the zombies do; instead, they appear at tactical positions based on the current location of the player. The mode is available on all multiplayer maps in the game. Players earn cash for items such as weapons, upgrades, ammo, air/ground support and equipmentSpecial Ops also returns from Modern Warfare 2. These challenge missions feature up to 48 stars, unlike its previous installment, which featured 69. Some weapons in Spec Ops are exclusive to that game mode, and are not available for play in Multiplayer mode.

The entire Killstreak reward system has been revamped. Killstreaks are now known as Pointstreaks, and kills are no longer the only way to increase the player's pointstreak. Completing objectives such as planting the bomb in Search and Destroy or capturing a flag in Capture The Flag awards points towards the player's Pointstreak. Pointstreak rewards are organized into three different "strike packages" called Assault, Support, and Specialist. The Assault strike package works the same as the Killstreak reward system in Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, offering rewards like the Predator drone and attack helicopters. The Support strike package offers support-style rewards, such as UAVs and SAM Turrets. Rewards from the Support category do not reset when the player dies, but accumulate over the course of a match. The Specialist strike package rewards players with perks of their choosing after every second consecutive kill. After eight kills, they receive every perk in the game, but reset back to none upon death. Players are allowed to choose which Pointstreak rewards they want to use when they gain it during the match, rather than choosing them between rounds.

Along with revamping the entire Killstreak reward system, Modern Warfare 3 also has a completely modified Ranking and Unlocks system, which does not use a currency system for unlocks. The player's primary weapon levels up alongside the player, and unlocks a number of "Proficiency" perks such as Attachments, (allows two attachments and is a successor to the "Bling" and "Warlord" perks), Kick (reduced recoil while aiming down the player's sight) and Focus (reduced flinching while under fire). Only one Proficiency can be put on a primary weapon. Another new addition is the ability to equip "Hybrid Scopes" on a weapon, such as a Red Dot Sight and a magnifier similar to an ACOG on the same weapon, and the player can switch between the scopes. Modern Warfare 3 introduces a new "Prestige Shop" which will unlock only after the player has selected the option to prestige for the first time. The "Prestige Shop" allows Prestige players to use tokens they gain from using the Prestige option to buy exclusive features such as double XP and a extra custom weapon class.

Several controversial perks in Modern Warfare 2, accused of being overpowered, have been removed in Modern Warfare 3. Diving from standing to prone, known as "dolphin diving", has been removed due to balancing issues.Modern Warfare 3 will utilize Treyarch's hot fix system to fix bugs and glitches. Modern Warfare 3 features a local and online split-screen option.

Several new game modes have also been added:
  • "Kill Confirmed" requires players to collect floating dog tags from the corpse of a downed enemy before the kill can be registered. However, the opposing team can pick up the dog tag as well to deny the other team of a kill.
  • "Team Defender" requires both teams to try to capture a flag dropped by the first person who gets killed when the match starts, and hold it to gain double points per kill while the team without the flag only gets the default amount per kill.
Private matches also now include pre-made game modes including: "Infection" (where the infected kills enemies to recruit them to their team), "Drop Zone" (where the player must hold a drop zone for points and care packages), "Team Juggernaut" (each team plays alongside an AI Juggernaut character), "Gun Game" (be the first to get one kill with every gun in the game) and "One in the Chamber" (in which players are only allowed one pistol with one bullet and three lives where they can only get more bullets by killing other players). Along with this, players are allowed to create their own game modes with customized settings such as number of players and time limit.

NEW GAME! Rainbow Six:Patriots

Rainbow 6: Patriots seems aimed at eliminating easy answers. Gone are the easy, foreign-ish targets of Rainbow Six past. Instead, Ubisoft has tipped headfirst into ultranationalist, home-grown American terror. In the inspiration reel of news footage that prefaced a more detailed explanation of Patriot's background, footage of Timothy McVeigh's handiwork at the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in 1995 loomed large, mixed in with imagery of 9/11. If this sounds unsettling, then maybe you'd better metaphorically sit down.
The Rainbow Six games have always dealt with collateral damage – namely, the prospect of civilian deaths – but where previously the death of a hostage would often be a failure condition, Rainbow 6: Patriots instead focuses on the consequences of that eventuality. Put simply, civilians are going to die and, occasionally, you just might be the one that kills them. The story sees a terrorist group that call themselves the True Patriots attempting to overthrow the US government, but rather than mounting a direct offensive, they've gone guerilla. The Patriots are also conscripting recruits, if you could call them that, kidnapping civilians and forcing them into the role of suicide bombers.

All of this left me feeling deeply uneasy. It's a sensitive, precarious time for American political movements, with Occupy Wall Street and its regional offshoots on one side protesting corporate greed and unchecked influence, and the Tea Party on the other, bristling at government power, often with gun in hand and the rhetoric of violent upheaval. It's difficult to reference current events without seeming exploitative, and I can't help but wonder if Rainbow 6: Patriots is falling on the wrong side of that line. Perhaps that's hypocritical, given how often shooters traipse through the gardens of other cultures' political unrest and how little it's ever discussed. But here, it's impossible for me to ignore.

There's not much point in giving the play by play of the demo I saw. The only real surprise was that Ubisoft played it for us, rather than showing us the previously released concept video. Rainbow 6: Patriots does exist beyond concept footage and target renders. It's not really fair to comment on how Patriots looks so far from release, other than to say it doesn't look bad, really. It just looks markedly different than the Unreal Engine 3-powered Rainbow Six: Vegas, which makes sense – Patriots is using a new iteration of Ubisoft's Anvil engine, tech better known as the backbone of the Assassin's Creed series. This adds a different quality to the way Rainbow moves and interacts with its environment.

There are spins on the Rainbow Six conventions we've grown to expect. For example, your squad can be ordered to breach doors, though this time around, Ubisoft aims to take some of the micro-management out of the process. Friendly AI is being developed to intelligently ascertain entry tactics based on the situation at hand. While the snake-cam from Vegas is also gone, it's been replaced by a new thermal imaging device that largely serves the same purpose.

Ubisoft also clearly plans on bringing Rainbow 6: Patriots to the multiplayer conversation again, though Patriots is still too early in its marketing to offer much in the way of details. The new addition on display last week was the sandtable, a multiplayer planning environment of sorts that allows teammates to plot routes of attack and other strategies before they'll invariably fall apart in the heat of the moment, as those things tend to do.
But it's difficult to consider these new additions amidst the subject matter that Ubisoft is guiding the series toward. I don't think there's much that games must avoid with regards to content, but games usually just aren't very good at dealing with difficult moral gray areas. Why that is involves a different conversation, but what I've seen of Rainbow 6: Patriots hasn't reassured me that Red Storm, Ubisoft Montreal, and Ubisoft Toronto have it all figured out yet.

The new Rainbow has me feeling hesitant, uneasy in a way that games don't often evoke in me. I suppose that Ubisoft should be lauded for their willingness to risk so much, to go so far out on a limb with one of its most successful franchises. But it seems an awful lot like the narrative equivalent of betting against the house.

Rainbow 6: Patriots is planned for a 2013 release, for undisclosed platforms
